The Weekly Fantasy Movie Game

GoBlock USA launched PickFlix in the summer of 2019 to the Ethereum MainNet. The Goal was to combine the realms of Prediction Markets, DeFi, and Entertainment.

PickFlix provided the opportunity for Players to mint ERC20 Tokens for a selected movie within a “Game”. Each Game contained multiple new release in-theater movies, and the movies competed with each other for box office dollars. With each box office dollar, a movie earned points. Those points were then divided among all minted Tokens for that movie. The points earned determined the Ether value of the Token, and the Token could be redeemed to PickFlix for ETH value.

There was some small initial success in late 2019 as the Ethereum user base was small (and still is small), and the word “DeFi” had barely been mentioned at this time.

With COVID in early 2020 shutting down US theatres, the PickFlix Games shut down as well. And, when the Gas price of a transaction skyrocketed with the popularity of DeFi, the small money transactions of PickFlix just no longer made economic sense. 

With those factors combined, we saw the “big picture” and closed our theatre doors in February 2021.

We hope that PickFlix will be remembered as a very early example of the fun and profitable possibilities on the Ethereum network.
